In Uncategorized on February 2, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Two DC area art centers are “Bookending” the DC art scene; Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Target Gallery in Alexandria, VA and Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Silver Spring, MD.

From late January through April, Torpedo Factory Art Center and Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Silver Spring are coming together for an interesting collaborative exhibition, “BookEnds: the Book as Art”. This juried exhibition focuses on the book as art and includes artists both nationally and internationally. The exhibition will be split between two venues, Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Target Gallery and Pyramid Atlantic: A Center for Print, Paper and Book Arts. The juror for this exhibition is Helen Frederick, Founder and former director of Pyramid Atlantic. Frederick chose 56 pieces that will be on display at both galleries. The work encompasses more traditional forms of art books and more contemporary and sculptural versions as well. The juror will present a gallery talk on February 12 at 7pm during the reception.

The Target Gallery, national exhibition space of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, is located on the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria, VA. The gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday 12-6pm and Thursdays 12-8pm.

Anthony Armstrong:  Fragmented Idioms

Exhibition:  February 5th– February 28th

Opening Reception:  Friday, February 6th  6-8PM

The social, political and economic struggles of the past are still present and just validity for artists of color who still search for definitive representation.  Anthony Armstrong’s work reflects social conscience and technical excellence.  Armstrong strives to create images inspired by African American people and their real life experiences.  There are three distinct categories to his work.  Definition…images that deal with the past.  Identification…images that relate to the present.  Direction…images that look into the future.

Anthony Armstrong’s mixed media on paper or collages faces the dilemna of race in art as faced by past artists such as Hale Woodruff, Jacob Lawrence, Aaron Douglas, and Romare Bearden.  Unveiling of “First Day”, a limited edition hand pulled serigraph by Lou Stovall.

the art league's annual patrons' show fundraiser

In Uncategorized on February 2, 2009 at 6:39 pm

The Patrons’ Show is The Art League’s biggest fundraising event of the year, and it provides new and seasoned art collectors with the great opportunity to acquire quality works of fine art at a bargain price while supporting a non-profit organization and community of artists.  For each ticket drawn, ticket-holders go home with a work of art valued anywhere from $175 to upwards of thousands of dollars.  Tickets, $175 each, are still available, wait list only.

The Art League’s annual Patrons’ Show features between 500-600 works of fine art donated by Art League and Torpedo Factory artists, and the number of tickets sold matches the number of works donated. The show may be viewed in The Art League Gallery from February 4-15, and ticket-holders may come during this time to view the show and note their favorite pieces.

On the evening of the Patrons’ Show drawing, tickets are randomly drawn and when the name of each ticket-holder is announced, they may select a work of art from the show that they wish to add to their collection.

The drawing for the 2009 Patrons’ Show will be held Sunday, February 15 in the main hall of the Torpedo Factory Art Center.

All proceeds go to benefit The Art League’s educational programming, exhibits, and community outreach programs.  Please contact The Art League Gallery for more information about this exciting event.

The Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center are pleased to announce that artist C.M. Dupre has been named Artist of the Year for 2009. With Friends President Mike Jankowski at her side, juror Shauna Lee Lange made the announcement at a reception in the Target Gallery on January 8.

Dupre, who has had a studio at the Torpedo Factory for over eight and a half years, was praised by Lange for creating paintings that “reflect in-your-face life passages that border and transcend on theatre, music, philosophy, literature, compassion and shared human experiences.” Read juror Shauna Lee Lange’s full speech entitled “A Mansion Owner’s Spirit.”

Dupre will receive a check for $1000 from the Friends and a solo exhibition of her work in the Target Gallery from June 10 through July 12. A reception will be held on Thursday, June 11 at the opening of the exhibit. The Friends have been sponsoring the Artist of the Year since 1992.

Honorable Mentions Awarded
Departing from prior practice, the Friends awarded honorable mentions to three competition entrants whose work was deemed by the juror to merit special recognition. TFAA artists Matthew Harwood, Rosemary Luckett and Elizabeth Kendall were awarded certificates at the January 8 reception. Harwood’s award was in the category of Technical Excellence, Luckett’s was in Original Voices and Kendall’s was in Media Representation. Congratulations to all of the winners!
