the other side of deb jansen – in her studio

In Uncategorized on July 24, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Deb Jansen’s been getting a lot of press (both positive and negative) lately about her Artomatic installation wherein she outs her cheating ex-husband and his lover on a life-sized wall encompassing a scaled photograph of the paramour  ”Jan Brady wannabe”.  The wall also contains Deb’s own journaled thoughts and the (secretly found) musings of her ex.  A Washington Post article describing the work is found here.  So because we both love coca-cola and lime tostidos, I thought I’d stop by and pay her a visit and just see how she’s doing.

What I found was NOT a thrill-seeking vigilante  nor an opportunistic arts world limelight seeker, but rather a woman struggling to find her own place in the crossroads and perhaps trying to regain her own true and authentic power (much of which was either given away or taken away during her marriage).  I found her to be disarmingly open and frank and vulnerable, but with a resolve of heart that will do her well.

Now I’m an outsider and I’ve only heard half the story, but as I look around at this fiber and textile artist’s studio, my eyes are assailed by brilliant color, a love of design, little Cooper anchoring down the whole place, and a sense of a partially forgotten Deb.  Deb’s going to come out on the other side of her pain, it’s just going to take time and maybe re-assertion to that which she really loves and that which really loves her back.

featured artist: ken dabkowski's gift of travel photography

In Uncategorized on July 24, 2009 at 3:03 am

Ken Dabkowki is a photographer I recently met (through his work) at Artomatic.  While a difficult artist to categorize, his images are at times quite riveting either in color or composition or lighting.  You just have to see #2 below (Rickshaws and Rain) in person!  Ken recently did an amazing (and very wise) thing; he noticed I had taken note of a particular image of his (Tough Women) and had written about it in his guest book during the show.  Yesterday, I got an email from Ken asking whether he could gift the work to our studios.  Wow.  Pay it forward and back! We’re taken aback by the generosity and the marketing.  So I wanted to repost some of Ken’s work from his site below for you all to see.  In addition to his love of travel (as evidenced below) Ken is a fan of local international food eateries!

national gallery of art's copyist program

In Uncategorized on July 22, 2009 at 3:23 pm

The National Gallery of Art copyist program has been in operation since the Gallery opened in 1941. A permit issued by the registrar’s office is required for copying works of art in oil or any other liquid medium. The Gallery provides permit holders with an easel, stool, and drop cloth; private easels are not allowed. Visitors may sketch with pencils or other dry media in the galleries without a permit.

To participate in the copyist program, applicants must meet all requirements outlined in the National Gallery of Art “Rules Governing the Copying of Works of Art” and agree to an interview and a security background check; they must acknowledge in writing their acceptance of the rules. For more information on the copyist program, please e-mail your name and mailing address to copyist@nga.gov. A packet of materials will be mailed to you within seven business days.

The issue of a copyist permit does not in any way constitute the National Gallery of Art’s endorsement of a copyist’s work.

What inspires my designs: Love, friendship, confidence, uplifting emotions, these feelings come into play.

Bio: Ever since I was 8 I had these strange goals, I just dreamed of doing big things. I wanted to be an entrepreneur. Then I wanted to be an inventor, but I lost interest. One day I wanted to be a pianist and even a scientist! Everyday I encountered others, I wouldn’t say a word, I stopped talking to my teachers, anybody in public. I wouldn’t talk to one person, then, I wanted to talk again but I couldn’t. It was too hard, there was nowhere for me to go.That all changed when I met this friend.

I always think of her, the image of me on this hilltop at night while the wind blows, stars shining till the last stardom with the rain pouring down, and the lanterns floating in the sky with the creatures hovering around. I would be standing on that hilltop and she’d come running up to me,she would hold me as the laterns in the sky started to sway. She was the one that gave me the confidence to speak again, then one day, I promised her something… I would be the greatist artist with this confidence that she gave me. I’m going to do this for my family, for my friends, for everyone because I believe that everyone should feel this confident, and I know that if I do this I can motivate everyone to reach their goals!

Ever since I had this goal, I started drawing in a different way, my own unique style. It’s hard to describe the times I had with this friend. Once sentence can describe it all. Together, we flew in the sky, over the oceans, in a dream that lasted forever! We cried in the most magical legendary lake of all time. One day, this friend died from cancer, but even till this day, I still try to reach this goal for her, and that’s all I can about me for now…

So I will….at all costs, reach this goal! If that means I have to do everything it takes, win every contest out there! Learn to use every medium there is, I will not stop! I just need a chance, I can do it! Please help me, I don’t have anybody to help me, but even though I’m alone, I know I can reach this goal!

My designs: My designs have a concept behind them. All things in the world reproduce at a constant rate, the flowers grow day by day, and the petals fly around from the thousands of blossoms. Humans reproduce in excess. The creatures are born from beams of energy and the cosmos of reproduction… they float around and reproduce in an endless cycle. Vines that grow and reproduce from the newborn creatures, and then comes the meteor shower…but these creatures continue to multiply. Pieces of data and shattered earth float around and rise from cracks, from this data life forms are constructing themselves and extending themselves into the distance. The creatures that reach the last phase of the cycle release their energy and strands of energy back into the drifting light. All creatures are forming from the natural causes.

My everyday saying, a detailed concept is a strong concept because an intricate concept is fully expressed with total possibility to the highest extent. The more detailed, the more thorough, meaning the more explored leading to unique possibilities.
