Great Falls Studios Sixth Annual Tour 2009

Meet 45 local artists in our studios, watch us work, take time to chat. Even if you’re in the Atelier for First Friday — come back over this weekend — you’ll see a completely different space full of artists with paintbrushes and other tools in hand.

We have booklets with maps and directions to all the studios around town — plus you can register for Art Bucks — Great Falls Studios will be giving away forty $50 art bucks (that’s a $2000 giveaway) to individuals who register to go to purchases of art on the tour. Only one entry per person. No change back. You can fill out a form in the Atelier or at other locations around town — or online.

Cowboys and Indians band together in “Faces of the Frontier: Photographic Portraits From the American West, 1845-1924″ at the National Portrait Gallery. This exhibit, opening Sept. 25, traces the tumultuous history of the region through images of legendary figures such as Geronimo, Buffalo Bill Cody, Annie Oakley and Kit Carson.

I met Diane Marra last night when she shared one of her art journals, concentrated on matters of spirit and faith, which she calls “faithart”. 

Diane is a dynamo.  Not only does she home school her adopted children, but she also teaches journaling.  What I loved about her work was that it carried a full-breath of thought thematically, yet each page has its own unique individuality.  We were rushed as I was looking through her pages and one definately gets a sense that if they could sit quietly with this work, the rewards would be many.  Diane’s art journals are content rich and encompass language, art, and space to breathe.  Click on her link to see some incredible visual diaries inspired by the word. 

Diane’s been busy getting her website together.  She’s a volunteer at New Hope Church where she attends and she recently participated in a Beth Moore simulcast that I also attended with members of Alexandria’s Downtown Baptist Church.  Diane and Nancy along with the rest of the girls will be meeting every other week to study the Psalms of Ascent.  In the meantime, Diane is also ramping up to teach a journaling class on Mondays (I hope to add info shortly).

Of course it is huge flattery when someone chooses to write about your work but when Shauna Lee Lange decided to write about my art project “Send Me Your Last Cigarette” not only did she pay me a huge compliment but she also lent a very gracious helping hand in keeping me honest in my smokefree journey and in keeping me highly motivated to persevere with my art project. Thanks to her encouragement I am so happy to be free of nicotine addiction as are so many others that share this journey and as a major bonus I have had several newspaper articles written about my work, am the 1st prize winner of the 2009 National Art of Recovery Exhibition in Richmond and will have a solo show of related artwork in Reno, Nevada in 2011.
