Jason Horowitz’s provocative large-scale and extreme close-up photographs of expressive drag queens conjure a multitude of reactions. Horowitz continues his ongoing interest in exploring the intersection of landscape and portraiture and how hyper-realism morphs into abstraction. Shot with the same "glamour" lighting set-up used for fashion images, these photographs subvert that process to look at what is real rather than ideal.

In the new body of work entitled DRAG, a new psychological element enters the artist’s earlier explorations of faces and bodies. The theatrical artifice of the make-up, similar to a mask, is at once concealing and revealing. We find ourselves shocked, drawn in, immersed, fascinated, yet a bit squeamish. Horowitz masterfully plays with the tension between attraction and repulsion. The over-the-top vamping and exhibitionist joy of drag queens is tempered by a simultaneous sadness and introspection. By exploding scale, Horowitz reveals not only the fascinating visual terrain of the face but also challenges our own hidden biases about femininity and masculinity, beauty and ugliness, gay culture, race, sexuality, and aging.

Horowitz initiated this series by shooting Washington DC’s acclaimed drag queen, Shi-Queeta Lee. Word spread quickly among her friends, so Horowitz was able to photograph many of the city’s finest performers over the past two years. Most recently, two of his drag queen photographs were selected by internationally known collector Mera Rubell of The Rubell Collection for the Washington Project for the Art’s "Cream" exhibition that opens Saturday, January 30 at the Katzen Art Center. http://auction.wpadc.org/ Two monumentally-scaled drag queens are included in the upcoming "Transhuman Conditions", an important exhibition curated by Jeffry Cudlin that opens tonight, January 29, at The Arlington Arts Center. http://www.arlingtonartscenter.org/transhuman-conditions

The DC Metropolitan Art Expo is taking place alongside the DC Metropolitan Food, Libations & Luxury Home Show which is a very high-end luxury home show. They specifically market to the more affluent and are expecting more than 10,000 in attendance.

Exhibiting at this event is by invitation only and space is quite limited, however since I know that only DC’s best artists review this site, if you wish to participate, call Teresa at 410-612-9330.

Dr. Burroughs, a writer, an artist and an educator, is also the founder of the DuSable Museum of African American History. Originally opened in her south side home in 1961, the DuSable is home to artwork celebrating the cultural heritage of African Americans. Born in 1917, Dr. Burroughs graduated from Chicago Teacher’s College in 1937 and received a Master of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1948.

A dynamic contemporary art exhibition featuring curated works from artists around the world on display for a full month, featuring musical and visual performances, lectures, live painting and much more!

Art Whino teams up with Crystal City BID and Vornado to present G-40: The Summit, a month long exhibition and event series featuring over 500 artists from around the world.

The mission of G40: The Summit is to bring the leaders of the New Brow genre together in Crystal City, VA in an effort to explore, discuss and grow this movement. G-40: The Summit will be a culmination of ideas and processes, brought together and highlighted by region and style, creating, for the first time, a full cross examination of this genre.

This event will feature 75,000sqft of exhibition space with 4 floors of art! Each floor will represent different hot hubs of the New Brow movement: The DC, New York, and California metro areas, plus one all encompassing floor for international and other regional artists. Visitors of G-40: The Summit will, for the first time, be able to experience entire floors showcasing artists from these regions, and because of this set up, connect the dots of how the different sub-cultures and environs affect the art. From the laid back California Style, to the fast paced New York way of living, the art will bring a fresh visual perspective that words cannot provide. With all the different styles in one place the New Brow movement, now growing and expanding worldwide, will be more comprehensible to the viewer, finally defining the line between the movement’s beginnings to its future. A movement that currently exists without much literature or founding in “traditional” institutions, yet includes some of the most highly recognizable and sought after art in the world, will inevitably become a major player in the intellectual and mainstream art world.

Each floor will have 10-30 “Showcased artists” who will activate the space with murals and installations, helping to set the mood for their region. In addition to the showcased artists we will have an additional 50-100 region specific artists exhibited on each floor. The show will run up for a month. During the month there will be musical and visual performances, lectures, and more. Also we will feature various art related groups and non-profits, helping to promote their mission and inspire ongoing conversations about the New Brow art world in DC and beyond.

Featured Artists: Caia Koopman

Caia Koopman is a native of California and was born in Livermore. She majored in fine art and earned a B.A. at UC Santa Cruz, California. Santa Cruz turned out to be the place that seduced her to the local skateboarding scene.

In addition to receiving an academic education, Caia also learned to skate ramps, streets, pools, and Derby Park. Skateboarding led to skateboard graphics, and her first limited edition team T-shirt design for Santa Cruz Skateboards. After earning her art degree, she turned her attention to snowboarding and spent many winters following the snow. It was her love for the sport that inspired Caia to strive for a career creating snowboard graphics and later branching out to become a commercial artist and finally a fine artist as well. Her artwork has been featured in numerous national and international print media including Surfing Girl, Mademoiselle, Details, Girl’s Life, Snowboarder Magazine, Teen, Teen Style, Teen People, J-14, Fine , and others. Caia designed T-shirt graphics and promotional illustrations for many companies, such as: Quiksilver/Roxy, Hurley, Op, AT&T, and Casio.

Caia’s paintings have been used commercially for many years as graphics for snowboards, skateboards and wakeboards for major companies such as K2, Morrow, and Hyperlite. Caia has also been featured on MTV, "mtv sports" as an athlete/artist for her snowboarding and painting. Caia has shown her paintings in a number of galleries around the world and most recently at La Luz de Jesus in LA. She is currently working as a freelance illustrator and painter in Oceanside, CA.

Caia is inspired by nature, dreams, politics, and life.

Featured Artists: Angry Woebots

Aaron Martin was born on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, but spent most of his childhood growing up and moving from Southern California to Nevada before finally landing back into Hawaii during his Junior year in high school. In 1999 while a car accident changed everything; this life-threatening experience inspired him to leave the island once again, this time to Seattle, Washington. Inspired by the rain and being indoors, he started playing around with different art mediums again. He then left back to Hawaii with a new perspective.
"I almost died that night, being trapped in metal changed everything. Almost ten years later but its just like it happened yesterday life’s been unbelievable I been blessed with the best Family and Homies ever, on top of that I been rocking out full time doing what I love just painting and meeting the coolest people."
Aaron had his first show in 2002 and has not stopped. Showing in galleries up and down California the east coast, have even showed in shows that have traveled from the United States, Tokyo to Hong Kong, Australia & New Zealand. Aaron has worked with companies & crews like Mind Style toys/Disney, Blue Scholars, Kidrobot, Fitted Hawaii /NewEra, Kicks Hawaii & has a project coming soon with Converse Red. Also being published in Magazines in the US & Europe.
His focal medium is acrylic paintings on wood and canvas. Using minimal colors and detailed character design, these paintings are usually comprised of stressed out emotional pandas. The pandas tend to represent the story of struggle.

Jophen Stein is a graduate of the Laguna College of Art and Design. After establishing the snootson family showcase in 2004 his distinctive style has gained national recognition over the past couple of years. Despite the minor set backs of being banned from Idaho and Iowa Jophen Stein continues the SFSC series from his studio in Pomona.

Featured Artists: Paul Chatem

Paul Chatem was born in 1974 in Bellevue, Washington, and grew up in La Crescenta, California. He graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1997 with a BFA in Illustration. While working various arts related jobs in the entertainment industry Paul developed his own personal work and started showing in group shows in Los Angeles. His first solo show “It Tastes like Whiskey” opened Feb. 2006 at the Black Maria Gallery in Atwater, CA. Since then his work has been featured at The Shooting Gallery in San Francisco CA, The Bluebottle Art Gallery in Seattle WA, CoproNason Gallery in Santa Monica CA, as well as in many group shows in North America and abroad. Paul is currently hiding out in the foothills of Los Angeles.

Reuben Rude was born in San Francisco, as the sun was setting on the Free Love era. His bohemian parents then moved "back to the land" to the woods of Northern California, where he spent the better part of his childhood without a television. This lack of technology forced him to spend almost every waking hour drawing and painting. When he moved back to the city to attend art school, he got into all the usual trouble with graffiti writers, skateboarders and art students. He now lives in San Francisco with his wife and eight-year-old daughter, and yes, a television. However, he still spends most of his waking hours drawing and painting. Sometimes he even gets paid for it.

Featured Artists: Casey Weldon

Casey was born August 27th, 1979, in beautiful Long Beach California. He spent his childhood in the then undeveloped eucalyptus groves of Yorba Linda and the labyrinth hills of Valencia, skinning knees, capturing flags, and drawing comic books.
After a hazy stint in high school, he went on to study at the Art Center College of Design where he graduated with honors in 2004.
He moved to Las Vegas, which was great. If you haven’t been there, I highly recommend it. He had some shows, made some friends and met a girl.

He now lives in Brooklyn, NY with said girl.

Featured Artists: Scott G. Brooks

Scott G Brooks is originally from Flint, Michigan, and currently lives and works in Washington, DC. His subject matter ranges from simple portraiture to intricate narratives. In his paintings, he takes social, psychological, and political issues and injects them with a dark sense of humor. Anatomical distortions separate the figures from the photographic ideal, which gives him the freedom to create his own distorted reality. His work is described as twisted and offbeat, sentimental, and disturbing. In addition to exhibiting in galleries, he has also illustrated several children’s books. His influences include Mad Magazine, Disney, Saturday morning cartoons, and talking heads on cable news.

Kelly Vivanco was born and raised in front of a sketchpad and a box of colors in Southern California. She later received her BFA with honors from LCAD in Laguna Beach. In 2004 Kelly became a Studio artist at Distinction in Escondido and currently maintains a working studio there. Her work has shown in numerous galleries and is held in collections across the U.S. and abroad.

Kelly enjoys setting whimsy to work in many mediums and pulls inspiration from the natural and imagined world, vintage photographs, children’s literature and the oddness of her dreams.

Featured Artists: Craig `Skibs` Barker

Craig “Skibs” Barker grew up in Southern California during the early ‘80s in the midst of both the punk rock and surfing culture explosions. With a healthy dose of punk flyers, album covers, and surfing magazines buzzing through his head, Barker began making flyers and t-shirts for his friends and his own punk bands. Fast-forward to today; Barker’s most recent paintings infuse his long-standing love for painting and rendering the human female figure with his punk-fueled graphic design. Mixing different approaches, techniques, and mediums, he creates a sense of memory, personal history, and appreciation for the female form. Combining elements of pop culture, literary censorship, and a positive mental attitude, he creates layered scenes of voyeuristic mischief. Barker’s work explores the junctions between past and present, memory and imagination, fantasy and reality, while creating a dialog between image and viewer.

Featured Artists: Josh Taylor

Josh Taylor died in the year 2037 at the young age of 57. It is still unclear the exact cause of his death, but there have been a couple of people who were close to Josh that started noticing weird things. While Josh was a private person throughout his life, young Tim McAllister (a neighbor) was sometimes allowed into Josh’s house. Josh had Tim run to the store to buy groceries or to mail out some prints. When asked if he noticed anything strange in the days prior to Josh’s death, Tim replied, "Yeah, a couple days before Mr. Taylor died, I had came in the back door and found Josh at his drawing table. He had his arm shoved elbow deep into his mouth. It really freaked him out when he saw me, and he tried covering up all the weirdness. He sure was strange." This is important though, because when the autopsy was being performed, Josh was completely cut open. On the inside of his body, it was discovered that Josh had been using his innards as a canvas. While only seen by a handful of people, it has been reported that the art INSIDE of Josh is leaps and bounds greater than anything else done by anybody, anywhere. Unfortunately, the Government seized control of all works of art in the year 2012 (music was seized around 1985), so it will not be issued until the Government decides what to do with it. It is doubtful that it will ever be seen, because his art is dark and controversial. It challenges all authority. It inspires people to question, it inspires people to seek change. One can only wonder what was created inside Josh, perhaps someday we will all be so lucky to see.

Graffiti for me is a powerful tool if used properly. It can bring empowerment to people within the urban area through compelling imagery of truth and awareness. To paint a mural that depicts strength, aptitude, unity, and pride in one self is what I live for. I have a strong passion for painting even if it’s not on a wall, but my heart is with the people who struggle. The single mothers, unemployed, imprisoned, poverty stricken individuals who I see everyday that still give themselves a reason to continue, that is my reason to continue. I thank GOD for the ability to create on the level that I do.

Peap, or Samapeap Tarr was born in Auckland NZbut grew up in many different places and countries because his mother is Chinese Cambodian and his father is from Te Awamutu and they were always on the move all over the place. He is a NZ based artist whose cultural background has influenced him and his emotions to create his signature sinister yet tranquil works of art. Known primarily for his use of bold black ink on a blank white medium, his art exists in a world where lightness and darkness battle, yet coexist in the same breath to balance each other and contrast against each other. It represents the ups and downs of life, the yin and the yang, the ongoing war that ends up being waged on canvas or whatever medium his work lies on.

adrienne moumin's monochrome photo collages hit new york

An artist photographer I have long admired for her sense of design and her discipline in exacting measurements is Adrienne Moumin. She has some good news to share about finding a venue for her works in the Big Apple. Congratulations, Adrienne!

It’s coming in February 2010…and you’re invited!

I will be exhibiting my handmade monochrome photo collages in "Architextures," my first New York solo exhibit, at the First Presbyterian Church, 5th Avenue and 11th Street, New York NY 10011, from February 3 through March 1, 2010.

An opening reception will take place on Sunday, February 14 from 12:00 to 2:00PM, and an artist’s talk with wine & cheese will be held on Thursday, February 11, at 6:30PM. Gallery Hours are Mondays 11-2, Wednesdays 11-1, and Fridays 12:30-4.

Writing for Visual Thinkers: Journal 1 « Lauren Schimming. Lauren’s written a good review of this book which encompasses mind maps, concept maps, freewriting, word lists and reflective writing. As you know, I’ve been very interested lately in map art both through the book “You Are Here: Personal Geographies and Other Maps of the Imagination” (highly recommended) and the newly published book “The Map as Art: Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography” (recommended not so much). Part of what compels me about map art is the link to outsider art and the link to creativity exercises. And as “Writing for Visual Thinkers” is a guide for artists and designers, I know you’ll love it too!

Art Whino is planning a fantastic show in March which is going to be a massive 75,000sqft exhibit. Its called the G40: Art Summit. Its kind of G20 meets 12 monkeys. Raw edgy art from around the world. Its going to be 5 floors. One floor for NY, One Floor for Cali, One floor for DC Metro area and one floor for the rest of the world. Each floor will have 10-20 installations and 50-100 artists from the region on exhibit. It will have visual performances, music performances, Art related nonprofits doing panel discussions etc. 30day of events in the month of March.

The 29th iteration of this exhibition highlights some of the region’s most talented artists, presenting a broad range of media and styles of both new and emerging artists as well as more established career artists. As an annual WPA presentation, the auction exhibition has gained new stature and recognition, evolving from a brief ‘showing’ of artists’ works as a preview for the WPA’s auction event, to one of the most prestigious and recognizable art showcases of its kind, with a high caliber of notable curators selecting the works. Cream is a notable survey of contemporary art in the region and beyond, featuring works by more than 110 local and national artists selected by an esteemed group of eight top curators including scholars, museum directors, practitioners and collectors. The works will be on view until the WPA 2010 Art Auction Gala on March 6, during which the exhibited works are available to the highest bidders.
